Maine traffic fatalities are significantly up in 2022, officials say

AUGUSTA, Maine —

Traffic fatalities are significantly up in Maine this year, leading to officials raising the alarm for drivers to be mindful of safe practices.

So far, 32 people have died on Maine’s roadways, according to the Bureau of Highway Safety. Maine saw an 85.7% jump in fatalities in January 2022 compared to January 2021, and a 27.3% increase in February 2022 over February 2021.Advertisement

Officials said many of this year’s fatal crashes were caused by unsafe speeds, reckless and impaired driving and the lack of using safety restraints.
