Electoral disaster in Ohio!

Welcome to Ohio, 2006–where voters must present i.d.’s, random machine audits will be strictly limited, and recounts will be unaffordable for average citizens.

Welcome to Bush-style “democracy”!

Go to: http://congressweb.com

On Tuesday, January 31, the Ohio House & Senate will likely approve Ohio HB3, a bill which will severely undermine future elections in Ohio, unless we speak out. The issues at stake are:

1) The cost of a recount will quintuple, making recounts virtually unaffordable;
2) Random audits of electronic voting machines will be restricted, making it harder to track machine fraud; and
3) Voter ID’s will be required, potentially disenfranchising specific groups.

There has been little recent press about these controversial changes. The issue of requiring a voter ID itself should be a page-one story, not a tiny blurb buried deep within the Local section of the January 27,2006 Cincinnati Enquirer (see below). The other changes, possibly even more damaging to fair elections, are not mentioned.

The reason the bill was not passed before Christmas and, instead, sent back to committee, concerned campaign contribution limits. Because the media was asleep, there was no public debate on the real issues at stake.

While the provision to dis-allow a secretary of state to also serve as head of a political campaign is heralded as progress, it is a smokescreen for the inequities hidden within the lengthy bill. Even this specific provision seems too little too late . . . considering last year’s election where Blackwell served in the dual role of Secretary of State and Co-Chair of the Ohio Bush-Cheney campaign.

There is still time for a public outcry, but without the help of the media and with only a few days remaining, we rely on you to quickly and aggressively get the word out.

As Mr. Blackwell and his Patriot Pastor buddies are fond of saying, “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.”

Overhaul bill sent for vote

A joint legislative committee voted Thursday to send a bill overhauling how Ohio conducts elections on to the House and Senate for full votes next week. The bill would require voters to show identification at the polling place, prohibit the Ohio secretary of state from serving on a campaign or issue committee other than the secretary’s own campaign committee, and increase the number of signatures required to initiate a statewide ballot issue from 100 to 1000, among other changes. The committee took out a cap in the original bill on the money local officials could receive from their employees for political campaigns. Instead, the committee expanded the prohibition for state and county elected officials from soliciting donations from employees to include local officials such as mayors. The House and Senate take up the compromise Tuesday.

Paper ballots are the choice of most Americans!

From Rob Kall:

The poll results are in. I'm just starting to distill them.

The first results are astounding, including 80+ support for paper ballots and government vs. privatized ownership of Election technology and voter registration.

Regarding the Santorum race, Casey's numbers tank when people find out about his positions-- and it's a certainty that Santorum will make sure they know Casey's positions. Both liberal candidates, once positions are known, draw a bigger percentage of responders than Casey.

Fire in your belly? Harry Reid will put it out!

From Carolyn Kay:
Do we need this guy?
Fri Jan 27, 2006 11:27 AM ETclip_image001_15.gif
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid admitted on Friday he and fellow Democrats lack the votes to block President George W. Bush’s nomination of conservative appeals judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“Everyone knows there is not enough votes to support a filibuster,” Reid said, referring to the procedural roadblock that some Democrats said should be used to put off a vote on Alito.
His message box is full, so I sent him a message via his webform:
What could have possessed you, sir, to tell Reuters that you don’t have enough votes to stall cloture on the Alito nomination?
You Democrats keep doing this. You declare defeat before the battle is even joined. Meanwhile, Republicans declare victory when they don’t have it. They thereby create an “aura of inevitability” that often carries them on to unlikely victories.
Why can’t Democrats do the same? It’s just not that difficult to figure out.

So Many Reasons Why the World Can’t Wait

By Missy Comley Beattie
Gold Star Families for Peace

As of January 26, 2006, there are more than 250,000 reasons why George W. Bush and Richard Cheney should be impeached. That number likely will have increased by the time I place the last period at the end of this article.

One of the those reasons is agonizingly real to my family-the death of Chase Johnson Comley, killed in Iraq on August 6, 2005, number 1,828, 1,829, or 1,830 (we don’t know for sure because so many died that week) of the 2,238 American dead and counted as I write this article. Casey Sheehan is Cindy Sheehan’s personal reason. Thomas J. Sweet II is Elizabeth Sweet’s personal reason. Daniel Torres is Sergio Torres, Beatriz Saldivar, and Christina Torres’s personal reason. Jeremy Smith is Amy and Maxx Branham’s personal reason. Eric Halvorsen is Dot Halvorsen’s personal reason. All of these people with eviscerating, personal reasons are members of Gold Star Families for Peace. These reasons should be personal to all Americans.

For every death, there is an agonizingly eviscerating, personal reason for the impeachment of the WAR CRIMINALS, Bush and Cheney.

Among those 250,000 reasons is a list of wounded soldiers, 16,420 as of this minute, although one website estimated 48,000 which means that I should increase the total number of reasons why Bush and Cheney should be impeached. This figure, too, will likely change before I place the last period at the end of this article.

Also among those 250,000 reasons is the number of Iraqi dead which according to General Tommy Franks, we don’t count. But somebody does. Their families grieve for the decisions made by our administration just as my family grieves. The British Medical Journal says at least 100,000 Iraqis have been killed.

And, included in those 250,000 reasons are all the wounded Iraqis, many of them children. Again, that list likely will change before I place the last period at the end of this article. I have no figure to record here. Probably, someone does.

Another of those 250,000 reasons is the number of journalists and their translators killed while covering this illegal occupation, a figure higher than in any other war.

Let’s factor in the 2,100 plus troop deaths since Bush landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln, announcing under a Mission Accomplished banner an “end to major combat.” Yes, I know it is included in the total of 2,238, which likely will change by the time I place the last period at the end of this article. I add it to the already counted number of reasons for impeachment simply because George W. made a mockery of the bravery of our soldiers with his reprehensible photo-op on that day in May of 2003. And who can forget the blustery “bring ’em on” challenge two months later?

Wait, let’s consider the 130,000 troops serving in Iraq today in harm’s way and combine that number with the 250,000 reasons to impeach George Bush and Richard Cheney. Suddenly, we’re up to 380,000. Do we have enough reasons yet? The world can’t wait any longer even though by the time I place the last period at the end of this article, there likely, tragically, will be so many more.

DO IT NOW (and hit Obama HARD)!

The word is that Obama is against the filibuster:

Friends – Please take action & please send this far & wide!

Senator John Kerry has called for a filibuster of the Alito nomination, heeding your calls to do everything possible to defeat it. He has asked that activists now help convince his colleagues to join him.

Please contact key senators who can provide critical support to the filibuster effort! Click here for free, one-step faxing to 12 key senators -> EVAN BAYH, Obama, Dodd, Lieberman, Biden, Bill Nelson, Durbin, Snowe, Reid, Schumer, Clinton, Chafee, Feingold.

Free, One-Step Online Fax to 12 Key Senators!!

Then forward this email to anyone you know who is worried that Alito would likely condone the abuse of power by the president, vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, and help curtail Congress’ ability to protect the civil rights, health, safety, and welfare of the American people.

We need to act now to prevent Senate Republican leaders from ramming this nomination through the Senate — time is of the essence.

The filibuster vote is scheduled for Monday. Send your free fax, sign Kerry’s petition (make calls?) anytime between now and then. Sooner is better.

Google joins the People's Liberation Army

The Real Cost of Google’s Sellout to China
Google is perfectly willing to posture as a brave defender of the privacy of its users in the U.S. marketplace it already dominates while caving to the immense commercial opportunity awaiting it in China. This is a harsh reminder that the concentration of media in the past decade has made the few giant companies that now control them more vulnerable to demands from foreign — and domestic — governments with their own agenda.

By Thomas Lipscomb

(January 26, 2006) — Last week Google announced its intention to resist a Department of Justice court action underway. DOJ wanted Google to allow a surveillance test of millions of its users’ search queries as part of its effort to enforce online pornography legislation passed by Congress to protect children. Yahoo, AOL, and MSN had already agreed to cooperate. But now, in an extraordinary development, Google has announced its decision to join the largest internet censorship effort in the world, being run by Communist China.

Google will actively assist the Chinese government in barring access to thousands of Web sites and search terms, in fact anything on the World Wide Web the Chinese feel might destablize its authoritarian government. It will also eliminate the blogging and e-mail services it offers elsewhere in the world. According to the Associated Press: “Google officials characterized the censorship concessions in China as an excruciating decision for a company that adopted ‘don’t be evil’ as a motto.”
