Siegelman backers seek pardon for ex-Ala governor

Some backers of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman want President Barack Obama to grant a pardon that would prevent the ex-Democratic officeholder from returning to prison for his 2006 bribery conviction.

Siegelman is out of prison on an appeal bond. But the U.S. Supreme Court this month rejected his latest appeal, and he may soon face a new sentencing by U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller of Montgomery.

Indicted in 2005 and tried the next year, Siegelman was convicted of selling a seat on a hospital regulatory board to former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy in exchange for $500,000 in donations to Siegelman’s 1999 campaign to legalize a state lottery, which failed. The Democrat served as governor from 1999 to 2003.

  • Former Gov. Siegalman has impeccable credentials of public service, honesty and integrity. He was charged and prosecuted for making an appointment that Republicans had made before him. Siegalman is a statesman. He was targeted and prosecuted by a fascist political hack.
