New Court Filing Reveals How the 2004 Ohio Presidential Election Was Hacked

A new filing in the King Lincoln Bronzeville v. Blackwell case includes a copy of the Ohio Secretary of State election production system configuration that was in use in Ohio’s 2004 presidential election when there was a sudden and unexpected shift in votes for George W. Bush.

The filing also includes the revealing deposition of the late Michael Connell. Connell served as the IT guru for the Bush family and Karl Rove. Connell ran the private IT firm GovTech that created the controversial system that transferred Ohio’s vote count late on election night 2004 to a partisan Republican server site in Chattanooga, Tennessee owned by SmarTech. That is when the vote shift happened, not predicted by the exit polls, that led to Bush’s unexpected victory. Connell died a month and a half after giving this deposition in a suspicious small plane crash.

Additionally, the filing contains the contract signed between then-Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell and Connell’s company, GovTech Solutions. Also included that contract a graphic architectural map of the Secretary of State’s election night server layout system.

Tuesday in NYC: Tell Governor Cuomo: Don’t lift New York’s fracking ban!

Join the rally in front of Gov. Cuomo’s office.

Tell Gov. Cuomo to protect New York’s water from dangerous fracking. Attend the rally across from his Manhattan office on Tuesday.

Dear Friend,

Since Governor Cuomo’s Department of Environmental Conservation issued recommendations to lift New York State’s ban on fracking, and open 85% of the state to this dangerous drilling method, grassroots opposition has been fierce.

Nearly 30,000 New Yorkers have signed our petition to Governor Cuomo, and more than 1500 activists have made calls to his office. Now, we need to keep up the pressure on.

Tuesday in Manhattan, our friends at Food and Water watch are organizing a rally to send a message to Governor Cuomo that he must reconsider this plan to endanger New York’s water. The details are below. Can you be there?

Manhattan Rally to tell Gov. Cuomo: Don’t lift New York’s fracking ban!

WHEN: Tuesday, July 26th, 12 pm.
WHERE: 633 Third Avenue, New York City, 10017

Click here for more info and to RSVP

The Department of Environmental Conservation is recommending opening the majority of the state to fracking. And while the watersheds of New York City and Syracuse would be protected, the recommended protection of these areas is an acknowledgment of the dangers fracking poses to our water.

All New York water must be protected from this dangerous method of gas drilling.

As the Governor’s administration continues working on this policy over the summer, we need to send a strong message that New Yorkers are going to keep fighting this bad decision until all New York water is protected.

RSVP to attend the rally in New York City Tuesday.

Thank you for protecting our water from fracking.

Elijah Zarlin, Campaign Manager
CREDO Action from Working Assets

P.S. If you haven’t yet called the Governor’s office, click here to make a call and ask Governor Cuomo not to overturn New York’s fracking ban. (You can leave a message over the weekend, but will need to wait till Monday to speak to a live person.)

Jane Fonda
The Truth About My Trip To Hanoi
Jul 22.11

I grew up during World War II. My childhood was influenced by the roles my father played in his movies. Whether Abraham Lincoln or Tom Joad in the Grapes of Wrath, his characters communicated certain values which I try to carry with me to this day. I remember saying goodbye to my father the night he left to join the Navy. He didn’t have to. He was older than other servicemen and had a family to support but he wanted to be a part of the fight against fascism, not just make movies about it. I admired this about him. I grew up with a deep belief that wherever our troops fought, they were on the side of the angels.

For the first 8 years of the Vietnam War I lived in France. I was married to the French film director, Roger Vadim and had my first child. The French had been defeated in their own war against Vietnam a decade before our country went to war there, so when I heard, over and over, French people criticizing our country for our Vietnam War I hated it. I viewed it as sour grapes. I refused to believe we could be doing anything wrong there.

It wasn’t until I began to meet American servicemen who had been in Vietnam and had come to Paris as resisters that I realized I needed to learn more. I took every chance I could to meet with U.S. soldiers. I talked with them and read the books they gave me about the war. I decided I needed to return to my country and join with them—active duty soldiers and Vietnam Veterans in particular—to try and end the war. I drove around the country visiting military bases, spending time in the G.I. Coffee houses that had sprung up outside many bases –places where G.I.s could gather. I met with Army psychiatrists who were concerned about the type of training our men were receiving…quite different, they said, from the trainings during WWII and Korea. The doctors felt this training was having a damaging effect on the psyches of the young men, effects they might not recover from. I raised money and hired a former Green Beret, Donald Duncan, to open and run the G.I. Office in Washington D.C. to try and get legal and congressional help for soldiers who were being denied their rights under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. I talked for hours with U.S. pilots about their training, and what they were told about Vietnam. I met with the wives of servicemen. I visited V.A. hospitals. Later in 1978, wanting to share with other Americans some of what I had learned about the experiences of returning soldiers and their families, I made the movie Coming Home. I was the one who would be asked to speak at large anti-war rallies to tell people that the men in uniform were not the enemy, that they did not start the war, that they were, in growing numbers our allies. I knew as much about military law as any layperson. I knew more than most civilians about the realities on the ground for men in combat. I lived and breathed this stuff for two years before I went to North Vietnam. I cared deeply for the men and boys who had been put in harms way. I wanted to stop the killing and bring our servicemen home. I was infuriated as I learned just how much our soldiers were being lied to about why we were fighting in Vietnam and I was anguished each time I would be with a young man who was traumatized by his experiences. Some boys shook constantly and were unable to speak above a whisper.

Why We Should Worry About Right-Wing Terror Attacks Like Norway’s in the US
Sunday 24 July 2011
by: Frank Schaeffer, AlterNet

The Norwegian police on Saturday charged a 32-year-old man, whom they identified as a Christian fundamentalist with right-wing connections, over the bombing of a government center and a shooting attack on a nearby island that together left at least 91 people dead.

Gang of Six Proposal Encourages Corporations to Move Offshore
By: masaccio Wednesday July 20, 2011 4:24 pm

The Gang of Six isn’t satisfied by screwing over Social Security and Medicare, and imposing sneaky tax hikes on workers with the Chained CPI. They want to give billions of dollars in tax savings to the richest corporations in the US, and encourage them to move jobs overseas. That is the logical result of changing to a system of taxing income only if it is “earned” in the US. This is called a “territorial taxation” system. Currently we have a hybrid system. We tax income from whatever source, but we give a credit for foreign taxes on the income, and we don’t tax any of the money until it is repatriated.

The territorial tax will delight these monster corporations that have accumulated billions of untaxed profits overseas. They can invest the money off shore to create any new business they might want to enter, in any country they might like, and with little effort completely avoid US taxation. This removes any reason for any corporation to manufacture in the US for export. As soon as possible, the company simply moves production off shore, and uses tricks to make the profits in some low tax country. Jobs leave, exports drop, and so do tax revenues.

The rich benefit from higher stock prices as the profits of their pet corporations rise,. When they sell off the stock, they only pay at the low capital gains tax rates.

They want to end America (Added note: Most of you probably want to read about the Norway events. There’s a lot to be said about that — but this story is even more important.)

The Republican “Gang of Six” is making a demand that will actually increase the deficit — enormously. Trying to sell this proposal as a debt-reduction measure is like calling a proposal to lace breakfast cereal with arsenic the “Healthy Children Initiative.”

And I see no indication that Obama will fight this measure.

To put the matter very simply: The Republican plan will make it even more enticing for American corporations to outsource jobs.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE PLANS PRINT-ONLY CONTENT
July 23rd, 2011

Joe Knowles, Associate Managing Editor of the Chicago Tribune, has told brucejquiller in an e-mail exchange that the newspaper will carry some content exclusive to its printed edition: “I think you’ll see some content that is print-only, so we can keep it out of the aggregation pool. If we are charging people for the paper and calling it premium (as opposed to putting it online for free) we need to restrict the access somehow.”

I asked if his paper planned to install a pay wall for online readers as the New York Times did recently.

“We have been experimenting with restricting access to some content online,” Knowles said. “You’ll have to register to get certain things. Eventually there may be some sort of pay system, but I don’t think we have it all figured out yet. I don’t know if anyone has it all figured out yet. Inevitably, the model will have to change. The current free-for-all system isn’t smart or sustainable.”

Obama is NOT “Caving” to Corporate Interests
by Jeff Cohen

In a campaign almost as frenzied as the effort to get Barack Obama into the White House, liberal groups are now mobilizing against the White House and reported deals that would cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. They accuse President Obama of being weak and willing to “cave” to corporate and conservative forces bent on cutting the social safety net while protecting the wealthy.

Those accusations are wrong.

The accusations imply that Obama is on our side. Or was on our side. And that the right wing is pushing him around.
