2010 – 2011: Earth’s most extreme weather since 1816?
By Dr. Jeff Masters

Every year extraordinary weather events rock the Earth. Records that have stood centuries are broken. Great floods, droughts, and storms affect millions of people, and truly exceptional weather events unprecedented in human history may occur. But the wild roller-coaster ride of incredible weather events during 2010, in my mind, makes that year the planet’s most extraordinary year for extreme weather since reliable global upper-air data began in the late 1940s. Never in my 30 years as a meteorologist have I witnessed a year like 2010–the astonishing number of weather disasters and unprecedented wild swings in Earth’s atmospheric circulation were like nothing I’ve seen. The pace of incredible extreme weather events in the U.S. over the past few months have kept me so busy that I’ve been unable to write-up a retrospective look at the weather events of 2010. But I’ve finally managed to finish, so fasten your seat belts for a tour through the top twenty most remarkable weather events of 2010. At the end, I’ll reflect on what the wild weather events of 2010 and 2011 imply for our future.

An Overview of Abortion Laws
BACKGROUND:
Since the Supreme Court handed down its 1973 decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, states have constructed a lattice work of abortion law, codifying, regulating and limiting whether, when and under what circumstances a woman may obtain an abortion. The following table highlights the major provisions of these state laws. More detailed information can be found by selecting the table column headings in blue. Except where noted, the laws are in effect, although they may not always be enforced.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Physician and Hospital Requirements: 39 states require an abortion to be performed by a licensed physician. 19 states require an abortion to be performed in a hospital after a specified point in the pregnancy, and 19 states require the involvement of a second physician after a specified point.
Gestational Limits: 39 states prohibit abortions, generally except when necessary to protect the woman’s life or health, after a specified point in pregnancy, most often fetal viability.
“Partial-Birth” Abortion: 16 states have laws in effect that prohibit “partial-birth” abortion. 4 of these laws apply only to postviability abortions.

We were thinking maybe it’s time for Koch whore Gov. Scott Walker to start paying attention to job creation in Wisconsin. Ever since he got elected he’s been acting like a baby with a nail gun, raising taxes on the poor, giving millionares tax breaks, destroying government unions, shrinking essential services for Wisconsin’s middle class and increasing joblessness in nearly all of Wisconsin’s cities.
Even a mouth-breather like Walker has got to realize that he’s bound to be recalled in 191 days if he doesn’t turn things around. Especially after making the enormous blunder of planning a budget-signing ceremony at a company owned by a felonious tax evader.
But no, he’s jetting to New York City on Tuesday to head a swanky fundraiser for the chairman of the Republican National Committee. That’ll create a lot of jobs in Wisconsin, won’t it? Actually, it will inspire a protest. Here are the deets:
Tuesday, June 28. Grand Army Plaza Park, 5th Avenue between 58th and 60th Streets (Across the street from the Sherry Netherland Hotel). The fundraiser runs from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Emergency Update: At approximately 1:00am Sunday, June 26, the aqua-berm quickly constructed around Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station broke and electricity had to be cut. The plant is now reportedly running on emergency generators as workers try to restore electricity after water surrounded main electrical transformers. The auxiliary building at Ft. Calhoun was surrounded by water after the berm failure. A Nuclear Regulatory Commission letter said if water enters the auxiliary building, there could have been a station blackout with core damage in hours.
US Women Who Have Stillbirths Face Murder Charges
By Ed Pilkington, Guardian UK
Women’s rights campaigners see the creeping criminalisation of pregnant women as a new front in the culture wars over abortion.
ennie Gibbs is accused of murder, but the crime she is alleged to have committed does not sound like an ordinary killing. Yet she faces life in prison in Mississippi over the death of her unborn child.
Gibbs became pregnant aged 15, but lost the baby in December 2006 in a stillbirth when she was 36 weeks into the pregnancy. When prosecutors discovered that she had a cocaine habit – though there is no evidence that drug abuse had anything to do with the baby’s death – they charged her with the “depraved-heart murder” of her child, which carries a mandatory life sentence.
Gibbs is the first woman in Mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of her unborn baby. But her case is by no means isolated. Across the US more and more prosecutions are being brought that seek to turn pregnant women into criminals.

Here’s a brilliant letter from Jonathan Simon to the editors of The New York Review of Books, responding to George Soros’s essay, “My Philanthropy,” which ran in the 5/23 issue.
(It’s here: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2011/jun/23/my-philanthropy/)
Soros, like my friends George Lakoff and Tom Frank, and many other very smart people, thinks that the GOP keeps winning at the polls because the party is so good at propaganda—which is to say that they (my friends et al.) think that the GOP keeps really winning at the polls.
In other words, they cannot wrap their minds around the notion that the GOP has “won” time after time through vote suppression and election fraud. This ought to be regarded as great news, since it suggests that people maybe aren’t so stupid after all (even in Kansas). And yet George Soros and my friends, and many others, just can’t go there.
This is the theme of Jonathan’s terrific letter (which the New York Review will probably not run, since they don’t want to go there, either).

So they’ll either work, and help turn the tide against Obama’s re-election; or they’ll simply serve as cover for the next election THEFT, so that the GOP’s (surprising) “victory” will, as ever, be
“explained” as the result of Rove’s hard-hitting ADS. (So it was when Kerry “lost”—because of the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth,” of course; and so it was two years before, when Max Cleland “lost”—because of Rove’s ad hinting he was soft on terrorism, having opposed BushCo’s creation of the Department of Homeland Security.)
OR something else is going on. But We the People will, as usual, be the last to know about it.

Karl Rove Dropping $20 Million on Anti-Obama Attack Ads
By Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, AlterNet

In case you were concerned that he\’d somehow changed: the National Journal is reporting that Crossroads, a conservative group affiliated with Mr. Burns-like GOP mastermind Karl Rove, is set to drop $20 million on ads attacking President Obama. It\’s not even autumn 2011! Election season apparently starts after the weekend, so buck up:
The first ad, which begins airing next Monday, shows a clip of Obama joking this month that some of the shovel-ready projects in the stimulus “was not as shovel ready as we expected” while highlighting rising unemployment and gas prices since he took office.
“Obama\’s $830 billion stimulus failed,” a narrator says in the ad. “14 million out of work. America drowning in debt. It\’s time to take away Obama\’s blank check.”
