‘Fracking’ mobilizes uranium in marcellus shale
by bjs

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Scientific and political disputes over drilling Marcellus shale for natural gas have focused primarily on the environmental effects of pumping millions of gallons of water and chemicals deep underground to blast through rocks to release the natural gas.

But University at Buffalo researchers have now found that that process – called hydraulic fracturing or “fracking”- also causes uranium that is naturally trapped inside Marcellus shale to be released, raising additional environmental concerns.

The research will be presented at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Denver on Nov. 2.

by Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman

Election woes got you down?

The 2010 Midterms Model and Electoral-vote.com: A Forecast Comparison
by Richard Charnin

Since the 2000 election, final projections based on likely voter (LV) polls have been quite accurate in predicting the recorded vote. Registered voter (RV) projections closely matched the unadjusted exit polls and gave the Democrats a 7% higher margin than the LV (i.e. recorded) margin. The True Vote Model gave the Democrats a slightly higher margin (2-3%) than the exit polls.

Rand Paul supporter in Ky. steps on woman’s head
By ROGER ALFORD
Associated Press

A liberal activist in a blonde wig was wrestled to the ground and had her head stepped on by a Rand Paul supporter when she tried to confront the Republican U.S. Senate candidate and tea party favorite with a fake award.

Lauren Valle, a 23-year-old activist with the group MoveOn.org, said she was sore and swollen Tuesday morning after she scuffled with Paul supporters.

“I think that this is an extreme example of the kinds of sentiments that people are feeling in many races across the country,” Valle said. “I think that tension is incredibly high.”

Schmidt Under Fire For Discussing Abortion With Kids

CINCINNATI — Parents of Cincinnati elementary school students are upset over remarks made by U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt. She reportedly brought up the abortion issue in front of children as young as 6.

The Catholic school asked not to be identified because it doesn’t want to be drawn into political controversy. The school’s principal told WLWT that the congresswoman was invited to be a guest speaker at an assembly in which students from first through eighth grade were present, and that most of Schmidt’s remarks were not political.

Now this is either an authentic glitch–or, perhaps, a canny move by the Republicans to help “confirm” their (usual) charges that THEY’RE the victims, and the DEMOCRATS the perpetrators, of election fraud.

That move would be especially helpful to them if/when they subvert the voting process on Election Day.

In any case, we need to find out who’s in charge of that machinery in North Carolina.

Touch-Screens in Two NC Counties Flip Straight-Party Votes Repeatedly from GOP to Dem
by Brad Friedman

County GOP Chair: The ES&S machines ‘ain’t worth a damn, we ought to go back to paper ballots’

One voter says: ‘I pressed confirm and screen went totally black’…

Aaand the touch-screen voting machines continue to flip votes during the early voting period. Right on schedule. Just as always. But, for the second time this week we have the unusual occurrence of votes reportedly flipping away from the GOP.

From Ken Anderson:

Mark,

At roughly the same time we were watching CNN’s attempted hit job on Assange and the Swedish deep state manufactured charges of moral turpitude, a retinue of former CIA analysts, the SAAII, and other intelligence alumni awarded Assange and Wikileaks the Sam Adams award. Guess the CNN twit missed that one as she tried to drill down into the really important stuff.

“…WikiLeaks and its leader Julian Assange have received the 2010 Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence award for their resourcefulness in making available secret U.S. military documents on the Iraq and
Afghan wars.”

Miller security guards handcuff editor
PUBLIC EVENT: Incident took place after town hall meeting at middle school.
By RICHARD MAUER

The editor of the Alaska Dispatch website was arrested by U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller’s private security guards Sunday as the editor attempted to interview Miller at the end of a public event in an Anchorage school.

Tony Hopfinger was handcuffed by the guards and detained in a hallway at Central Middle School until Anchorage police came and told the guards to release Hopfinger.

Hopfinger has not been charged but the owner of the Drop Zone, the private security firm that’s been providing Miller’s security, accused Hopfinger of trespassing at the public event, a town hall sponsored by the Miller campaign. The owner, William Fulton, also said Hopfinger assaulted a man by shoving him.
