What’s going on in Australia?
by Irene North
First, the country started moving towards internet filters and censorship on a scale only seen in China. Then, they wanted ISP data retention on all net activity. Now, they want to link passports to internet activity.
Sheila Parks is A-OK.

From Liz Rich:
Dear Gentlepeople I love using that word.
A member of our group, Sheila Parks, has been one of the pioneers working for paper ballots and against the fraud and error of electronic voting machines. She has asked me to help her raise money to attend a forum in Detroit where she is featured in this effort. Unfortunately, her first email with this request got lost or you would have had it much earlier. Now she is down to the wire.
If any of you could support her with just a donation of $10.00 it would allow her to attend this meeting and further the cause. Here is her explanation for this request. Sheila does selfless work and deserves to be supported if you possibly can. Thank you, Liz
FROM SHEILA:
I have been working on voting rights and against the fraud and error of electronic voting machines since the 2000 presidential election. See http://www.handcountedpaperballots.org/
I am scheduled to give a workshop on hand-counted paper ballots (HCPB) at the United States Social Forum 2010 (USSF10) being held in Detroit, June 22-26. I am also invited to take part in a round table on elections while there.
I am raising money for travel and lodging and food for 4 days in Detroit.
Recent elections, especially, but not limited to South Carolina, are giving the e-voting machines some real attention now. This is a really important opportunity to talk about the fraud and error of the machines and advocate for HCPB to a new audience.
If you can donate $10 to this trip, please make check out to Center for Hand-Counted Paper Ballots and mail to:

I regret we are not tax deductible yet.
Since this trip getting down to the wire, could you email me at:

How Taxpayers Are Subsidizing BP’s Disaster Through the Pentagon
By Nick Turse
Residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida are livid with BP in the wake of the massive, never-ending oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico — and Barack Obama says they ought to be. But there’s one aspect of the BP story that most of those angry residents of the Gulf states aren’t aware of. And the president hasn’t had a thing to say about it.
And so they have ensured another “victory” this November–for the GOP.

BREAKING: SC DEMS REJECT SENATE ELECTION PROTEST; UPHOLD ALVIN GREENE ‘VICTORY’
By Brad Friedman
Rejects Judge Vic Rawl’s protest in 5 hour hearing with expert testimony on how ES&S voting
system failed
Greene not at hearing, presented no case, evidence that election results were accurate…
The Gulf “spill” has us paying for many things–one of which is Big Dick Cheney’s view that conservation is for sissies, and his secret sitdown, right after BushCo’s coup, with the top dogs in the energy cartel, and all that happened afterward; and so we’re also paying for the media’s acquiescence in that early crime (among scores of others, including BushCo’s coup).
So where has Dick been since the rig exploded? He’s been uncharacteristically reserved–very different from his usual mouthing off, like a Mafia kingpin daring the authorities to try and nail him. Even with Obama in the White House, and Eric Holder (therefore) wearing his blindfold and earplugs, Cheney doesn’t seem to feel it would be wise to say a word in public.
Could it be because his gang, Halliburton, was BP’s accomplice in this crime for which there aren’t sufficient words?

BP and Halliburton’s Role in the Gulf Oil Disaster– Well Casing Horror Story
By Rob Kall
Right from the beginning, it was reported right away– that Halliburton’s job was to cement and seal the well casing. But I misunderstood what that meant. I took it to mean that Halliburton’s job was to seal the connection between the well-head and the top of the pipe that was drilled 18,000 feet into the ground.
Wrong.

BP, Government Still Thwarting Press Access
Despite promises to facilitate oil spill coverage, limited transparency persists in the Gulf
By Curtis Brainard
Despite repeated promises to improve transparency, BP, the United States government, and their contractors are still inhibiting the media’s ability to cover the largest oil spill in the country’s history, which began April 20 with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.
Gulf News; From Bad to Worse
By Rob Kall
Sit down. Get ready. Your life has begun to change. It will never be the same again. This gulf disaster is changing everything. Call your legislators. Tell them that they are now on notice. There are the constituents and there are planet killing corporations, ready to wipe out life on the planet for a profit. Those legislators have to choose whose side they are on.
No more bullshit. No more lobbyists getting favors. This is life or death.

The film’s premiere week will also include a Summer Solstice Celebration on June 21st and a post-screening fundraising party for NOFA-NY on June 25th at HERE’s adjoining café, Dom Hudson Square. A $20 donation is requested to come enjoy a free drink and local, organic food grown by several farmers in the film.
Amazing video by Edward James Olmos and Robert M. Young, about what’s really going on down there. Please watch the whole thing, and pass it on:
