“Chances are” for oil to reach islands after late week change in weather, says Bahamian official

The Bahamas’ Chief Climatological Officer warned that oil may soon wash ashore on the island chain because of changing weather conditions in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a Tuesday interview with The Nassau Guardian, Michael Stubbs said, “As Friday approaches we see the weather pattern changing and what would happen then is the winds in the area would be flowing clockwise, making it possible for oil floating on the surface to make it to the notorious loop current. So once the particles move into the loop current the chances are for it to reach our area.”

Vitter Pushes for BP Bailout Bill in Senate

U.S. Senator David Vitter asked for unanimous consent to pass legislation that protect BP and other oil companies by limiting their financial liability for oil spills and potentially leaves taxpayers on the hook for the cost of cleaning up the damage. Vitter’s request was met with objection and did not pass.

U.S. Recession Breeds Escalating Violent Crime

The Wall Street Journal reported that violent crime is down in the big cities in the U.S., saying this breaks the pattern between economic downturns and an increase in crime. Supposedly this is because policing has advanced, not because human nature has changed. I do not believe the article is plausible.

If Chicago is any indication, it is much more likely the statistics are being doctored and that the public is being lied to in a profound way. Many cities and states are strapped for cash and the public doesn’t want to hear that crime is up while police budgets are being cut.

Chicago wasn’t mentioned in the article, but violent crime is way up, and the police force has been cut. I believe this increased violence is related to the economy, and it is not mere crime, it is civil unrest. The city of Chicago is being wrecked, and tourist attractions like Navy Pier are unsafe and lack police support.

Obama Set To Send 1,200 Troops To US-Mexico Border

WASHINGTON – Under pressure to take action, President Barack Obama on Tuesday
ordered 1,200 National Guard troops to boost security along the U.S.-Mexico border, pre-
empting Republican efforts to force a congressional vote to send the troops.

Obama will also request $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities,
according to lawmakers and administration officials.

The president’s action comes as chances for comprehensive immigration reform, Obama’s
long-stated goal, look increasingly dim in this election year. Obama has been all but compelled
to do something since Arizona’s passage of a tough illegal-immigration law thrust the border
problem into the public spotlight.
