New York, N.Y.
Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) will host a benefit performance of “TOP SECRET: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers,” a riveting historical play by Leroy Aarons ’58 and Geoffrey Cowan that recalls one of journalism’s most important chapters. A talkback will follow the staging, with DANIEL ELLSBERG, who leaked the top-secret Pentagon Papers to The New York Times and The Washington Post, and set the stage for a historic showdown between the press and the Nixon administration over First Amendment rights; LESLIE GELB, former director of the Defense Department project that produced the Pentagon Papers, and who later served in a variety of posts in government and at The New York Times; JAMES GOODALE, The New York Times vice chairman and general counsel who disagreed with outside counsel and defended the paper’s right to publish the papers; and NICHOLAS LEMANN, dean of Columbia Journalism School and former Washington correspondent for The New Yorker. Moderator will be Professor and CJR Chairman VICTOR NAVASKY.
