Discussion of the 1957 classic,
The Hidden Persuaders,
reissued by Ig Publishing with a new
introduction by Mark Crispin Miller
This monthly series hosted by author and activist Mark Crispin Miller features authors whose books tackle political and public issues from a stance outside the mainstream. Tonight’s conversation focuses on Vance Packard’s The Hidden Persuaders, originally published in 1957 and reissued by Ig Publishing for its 50th anniversary. Packard’s pioneering and prescient work was the first book to expose the hidden world of “motivation research,” the psychological technique that advertisers use to probe minds in order to control our actions as consumer, and to show how the insidious manipulation practices that have come to dominate today’s corporate-driven world began in the 1950s. Mark Crispin Miller wrote the introduction to this new edition, and leads tonight’s conversation about how our thoughts and feelings are manipulated by business, media, and politicians.
