Making Our Votes Count
To the Editor:
California’s secretary of state, Debra Bowen, has now joined Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida in recognizing that electronic voting machines are fundamentally flawed (news article, Aug. 5).
The bitter controversies surrounding the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections have made it clear that paper ballots offer the only means by which we can guarantee the possibility of a fair vote count, and thus the essence of our democracy.
Let’s hope the rest of the nation catches on by, say, November 2008.
