Dear Mayor Giuliani:

Since you have based your presidential campaign almost exclusively on
your reaction to terrorist attacks on New York City, and since you
have recently accused Democrats of being on the defense against
terrorism and therefore guilty of inviting more casualties, I have
one question for you: Where were you on terrorism between January 31,
2001, and September 11th?

The first date was when the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st
Century issued its final report warning, as did its previous reports,
of the danger of terrorist attacks on America. The George W. Bush
administration did nothing about these warnings and we lost 3,000
American lives. What did you do during those critical eight months?
Where were you? Were you on the defensive, or were you even paying
attention?

Before you qualify to criticize Democrats, Mr. Giuliani, you must
account for your preparation of your city for these clearly predicted
attacks. Tell us, please, what steps you took to make your city safer.

Until you do, then I strongly suggest you should keep your mouth shut
about Democrats and terrorism.

You have not qualified to criticize others, let alone be president of
the United States.

Gary Hart
(co-chair, U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century)

P.S. You might ask these same questions of George W. Bush while you
are trying to find a better reason to run for president.

Along with driver’s license, voters should have to show ‘right stuff’

Friday, April 27, 2007

One good thing about Rep. Betty Brown’s bill on the kind of ID voters should be required to bring to the polls with them?

Since her provision would cut down on voter turnout, it would free up parking at the polls.

Then again, so would a chicken flu epidemic.

Brown’s bill, which passed the House this week with all Democrats voting against it, would make it harder for people to vote.

Why?

Because it would make voters show a voter registration card and a driver’s license, or two other types of ID, such as your concealed weapons permit and your sex change papers.

Voter Fraud Scam Fails in Milwaukee Test Market
“Voters likely to feel they’re being watched”
(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel – JSOnline- 31 Oct 2004)

“Scoop” Independent News
Washington, DC
Part 2 (Part 1)

This article describes the coordinated effort on the part of the Republican Party to establish alleged voter fraud committed by Democrats as a serious problem. Despite the disruptions it caused, an evaluation of the evidence shows the effort failed on multiple levels. Yet the effort perseveres and the myth that voter fraud is rampant is promoted even today by Republican operatives and others who should know better.

The latest version of the voter fraud myth had its origins Milwaukee before, during and after 2004 presidential election. The Republicans rolled out voter fraud as a crime of epidemic proportions; test marketed that concept with a vigorous press campaign; and encouraged a law enforcement effort to catch the hypothesized vote cheaters. This effort is well documented.
Based on prior experience, the news of impending investigations and arrests would be expected to suppress the minority vote. The Milwaukee effort, combined with others, offered to (a) strengthen the voter fraud myth as a vehicle to restrict voting by minorities and (b) provide inoculation should the Democrats or anyone else claim massive election fraud in Ohio or other key battleground states.

At 10:28 PM, been there said…

i know you like to point out the history of voter fraud in chicago. and i can’t argue too much. but i would like to draw your attention to the 49th ward aldermanic runoff. if there is an honest person in the city council, it is probably my alderman, joe moore. he can’t be much of a crook, he ended up 51 votes short in the primary, and ended up in a runoff with a guy, don gordon, who sure smells like a republican. his strategy on election day was challenge, challenge, challenge. he lost by 247 votes. don is contesting the election. i was a judge, and the dozen or so challenged voters in my precinct were all black. hmm. all but 2 were able to identify them selves, and were allowed to vote. now he says that 10% of voters in that precinct were invalid.

i could go on. but many things about this campaign smell funny, including rabid bloggers with a positively rovian way of framing non-issues, and a huge chunk of change from one of the swift boat funders.

so, i have to agree that there is a concerted effort to frame dems for “voter” fraud. and what better place to look than chicago? especilly at an alderman that took on walmart, the iraq war, and impeachment.

things that make you go hmmmm.

Fox got caught this week with their hand in the cookie jar, or should I say the ham sandwich. They went on-air with a flat out made up story. The story involved a ham steak being placed in front of Muslim students as a prank in a middle school in Maine. Fox News Channel believed a parody site that said that an Anti-Ham Response Plan had been implemented at the school to fight against ham sandwiches -
and ran with the story on-air.

You know they wanted to believe the story. They ran it because it’s the kind of thing Fox eats up. They love to ham up these fake stories of political correctness. And this involved making fun of sensitive Muslims, even better. Fox was in hog heaven.

This is their silly “War on Christmas” type of story on crack. Instead of embellishing and making up stories on their own, this time they made the mistake of using an actual parody that could be proven to be fake. That was their real error. They’re usually savvier than that.

I have called Fox, “Fake News Channel” before because of their penchant for putting so much bias in stories that they aren’t representative of reality. That’s actually a much worse transgression than this because there they convince the mainstream media to cover real stories with their false slant — and the press usually falls for it. In this case, it’s good to see that they lived up to the title of literally being the Fake News Channel.

I remember when Fox News demanded that all of the CBS producers and anchors be fired when they went with an uncorroborated story on-air. I am sure they will apply the same standard to their staff, right?

Yeah, when pigs fly.

Most Katrina Aid From Overseas Went Unclaimed
By John Solomon and Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, April 29, 2007; A01

As the winds and water of Hurricane Katrina were receding, presidential confidante Karen Hughes sent a cable from her State Department office to U.S. ambassadors worldwide.

Titled “Echo-Chamber Message” — a public relations term for talking points designed to be repeated again and again — the Sept. 7, 2005, directive was unmistakable: Assure the scores of countries that had pledged or donated aid at the height of the disaster that their largesse had provided Americans “practical help and moral support” and “highlight the concrete benefits hurricane victims are receiving.”

Many of the U.S. diplomats who received the message, however, were beginning to witness a more embarrassing reality. They knew the U.S. government was turning down many allies’ offers of manpower, supplies and expertise worth untold millions of dollars. Eventually the United States also would fail to collect most of the unprecedented outpouring of international cash assistance for Katrina’s victims.

Fascist America, in 10 Easy Steps

By Naomi Wolf, Chelsea Green Publishing
Posted on April 28, 2007, Printed on April 28, 2007

Editor’s note: This is adapted from Wolf’s forthcoming book “The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot.”

Last autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down — the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened some limits on travel and took certain activists into custody.

They were not figuring these things out as they went along. If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy, but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.

As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated in the United States by the Bush administration.

EAC Interferes With Florida Decision To Rid the State of Touch-Screen DRE Voting Systems

Announces Meeting to Discuss Florida…to be Held in Washington DC…
Guest Blogged by John Gideon

[T]his public meeting that is very important to the state of Florida — will be convened in Washington DC to ensure that the commissioners make it as hard as possible for anyone to attend and voice their opinions.

The EACs “Sunshine Notice” announcement is for a meeting that is murky and as closed as the EAC can possibly make it without directly violating federal law.

Jiffy Law

Jon Stewart mocks Pat Robertson’s law school
04/27/2007 @ 10:05 am
Filed by David Edwards and Mike Sheehan

Jon Stewart took aim at televangelist Pat Robertson’s law school, Regent University, on ‘The Daily Show.’

The House Judiciary Committee, investigating the U.S. Attorney firings scandal, voted to grant immunity to former aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Monica Goodling. Goodling is a graduate of Regent.

“There are over 150 other Regent alumni currently working in the Bush administration with her,” says Stewart. It’s not surprising, he says, “since the latest U.S. News & World Report ranks Regent as a ‘Tier Four’ school, out of what must be hundreds of… oh, there’s only four tiers.

“Well, certainly four must be the best tier of the… eh, it’s the worst tier,” adds Stewart, to laughter. “Apparently, I’m being told that Regent is tied with Jiffy Law.”

Watch the clip.

It’s urgent that you write, fax or call New York State Education Officials and tell them not to allow untested, unapproved DREs to be used in the Troy School District Election.
Yesterday I wrote about a new threat to voting integrity in New York State – the Troy NY School Board is planning to use uncertified DREs in School Board Elections on May 15th. This end run by DRE vendors around New York State Election Law must be opposed; We Must Act Now!
Take Action – Write, fax, or call the Commissioner of Education and the NYS Board of Regents and tell them to stop the use of electronic voting machines that have not been approved by the NYS Board of Elections – it will undermine citizen confidence that the election results are legitimate, and open the election to legal challenges throwing the outcome of the election into question for months.

Please Take Action Today! Uncertified DREs will be used on May 15th!

Contact information for the Commissioner of Education and the NYS Board of Regents are listed at the bottom of this message.
Tips for writing your letter – It’s best to tie the subject matter to yourself in a personal way to make the letter stand out. Whether a computer programmer, lawyer, minister, social worker, election inspector, etc., make the introduction of the letter unique. Then from the Essential Points document on the NYVV website, pick one or two points to make. A short, personal letter from one person counts as one opinion just as much as a lengthy, technical letter, so it’s fine for your letter to be brief.
We must challenge this attempt by voting machine vendors to sidestep voting machine regulations that New Yorkers have worked so hard for. There’s no time to lose – Please Act Today!
